Excursion

A unique mixture of wine and history in one village!

Tour Information

Sirince is a beautiful old Greek village located near to Ephesus and surrounded by hills and mountains.  Sirince is also known as “Ephesus in the mountains” due to the remains of 42 Churches and Monasteries in and around the village.  It is believed that Sirince was formed when a group of people settled there after the fall of the City of Ephesus in the 15th century.

Sirince was formerly inhabited by Ottoman Greeks who named the village Kirkinca, meaning  “fourty-ish”,  which locals pronounced Cirkince which means “sort of ugly” (which it definitely is not) During the exchange of population following World War 1 the Turks from Thessaloniki moved there and changed the name to Sirince, meaning sort of sweet and charming.

Sirince has become famous for its olive oil, fruit and wines.  Some say the Orthodox Greeks who lived there during the Ottoman Empire were famed for the excellence of their wines.  The Muslim turks who moved there from Thessaloniki in 1924 re-instated wine making using the local fruits.  You can taste the results for yourself when you visit.

Highlights of the day:  Wine tasting, buying hand-made olive oil soap and tasting and buying the best olives in Turkey!!
